Social mobilization and outreach

CCFID has made a modest beginning with its work with children with two initiatives - one promotion of child rights and quality education in 20 Government schools in Cuddalore district and second direct intervention in supporting construction of a Pre-school (Anganwadi) affected by tsunami. Children form one of the key target groups for CCFID and the organisation will endeavour to support this group with an aim that that they can excel not only in academics, but groom to be a fearless and enlightened citizen. Sports is another aspect that CCFID promotes amongst youth, this includes providing technical mentoring services and equipments and infrastructure to get the right training and exposure.

Pre - School Infrastructure

Community Collective Society for Integrated Development (CCFID) started its development activities in Cuddalore district in September 2007. In February 2007 CCFID visited Panankattu Colony and found that the Anganwadi school (Pre-School) was damaged and not in use. Thirty school children - girls and boys in the age group 2-3 years attended the school. The village community requested CCFID to support for reconstructing a new school building.

The residents of Panankattu colony belong to Scheduled Caste community and there are about 100 families. The community members both men and women are engaged in labour activities for which they get a daily wage of Rs80-100. Some men also work as labour for sea fishing. More than 72% of the parents are illiterate.

The Pre School was constructed by the Government in the year 1980 and the structural damage was caused by the tsunami waves. The children were placed in temporary shelter for the pre school education. But this structure was in place only for 8 months and got damaged due to heavy rain. The damaged structure was pulled down by CCFID and new structure is in progress in the same location.

The construction activity is now complete. With the new school building we expect to meet the community need to have a safe learning space for their children. The intervention is equally significant for CCFID with its commitment to work for children and their rights.

Now we understand the pain of beatings and now we realize the responsibilities of the children and our children were doing their things very well and my son now he wants to be an engineer and he do his best in his studies. SHGs informed that we are at kurinjipadi non-tsunami area and my kids do not have any supporting skill to compete with urban area students. Now we understand children's are also part of a society and we will protect our children from common misuses and abuses and we will discuss about their ideas and over all we thank both CCFID and Save the Children for selected the school for this project and for upgrade the children and we wish the team to succeed in their mission and vision.

We the SHG members were thankful to CCFID and Save the children to realize our roles and responsibilities to the children and to understand child rights and for the whole thing they done for our community and we request both partners to mobilize this programme to remaining areas.

Children group Activity -Silver and Diamond club

Our group has representation from 6th, 7th, and 8th standard students and we selected the name for our group and in our group we had selected one leader. CCFID staff took our animator to the TOT training. The leader discussed about the TOT to other member of the group and we had a group meeting every Friday and we discuss about the problems around our school level and in village level. The children group has increased enthusiasm to address issues for the benefit of their peers and community-greater sense of social responsibilities. Protect themselves from child abuse or any issues related, they are now the decision makers of their groups.

One time we had a water problem in our street and we (children group member) went to the Village President and we discussed about it. With his support we got the water connection within two weeks.

Village Education Committee -Kothavacherry Village

We thank to CCFID - Save the Children, for mobilize us in respective schools previously our schools was not supported by any other projects than NGOs who already work for think as other NGOs who already work for community as bags, toys, cookies, toffees, nutrients things etc. But both partners CCFID and Save the Children they came to give life skill classes for students to identify and achieve their goals. Sports material for students to bring our village students to competitive with other town side students. Later they formed children's club and through the children club they gave awareness on child rights, non-discrimination, Activity Based learning material for the children of Ist and II standard classes. Initially we thought boy is better than girl and they are auspicious wealth for the family.

Later the speech given by the Coordinator about the children group activity and rights of the children were discussed about the discrimination of male and female. The VEC members appreciate the service of CCFID - Save the Children to motivate all my school students to develop their skills, their goals and their plans to achieve their goals. We request this service should reach all the part of world because there should not be any discrimination. Once again we thank to both partners for giving such a tremendous projects.

In this rural area most of the people are uneducated, before they were not aware of children's right but after CCFID's orientation of child rights and child protection to SHG's now most of the people are well known about the rights. In VEC meeting before we had we won't allow the children to speak or to participate in the programme but after the CCFID gave orientation to the SHG's and the children group activities, the children the SHG people and the village leader are participating in the VEC meetings this is the big change made us to speak the problems in the VEC meeting. The children group is actively participating in the school level programmes and also in village level programmes.
